Lavender, Hibiscus, & Elderberry Tisane // Autumn Makes & Does

If you listened to the podcast yesterday, you know I am currently staycationing in lovely Queens, New York, where it is still a little more wintry than I’d like. Don’t worry, so far there have been plenty of treats and instagram-worthy weeknight dinners, so I can’t really complain. Since I was going to be eating more meals at home this week, I made it a goal to do a bit of pantry clean-out cooking. Not a major overhaul–although that definitely needs to happen–more along the lines of excavating that container of hazelnuts from the back of the top shelf and making the hazelnut milk from Whole Grain Mornings that I’ve been meaning to make. I also took care of a languishing bag of raisins with the GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) granola from the Food in Jars cookbook. [click to continue…]

Brazilian Cheese Bread (Pão de Queijo)

Brazilian Cheese Bread (Pão de Queijo) // Autumn Makes & Does

When we were in Chicago in January for a friend’s wedding, we ate a little placed called Cassava that specialized these cheesy, chewy little breads. We ate there twice in one weekend because when you’re a gluten-free person in a new place, a restaurant you can eat at is always your new best friend.

Samoa Jello Shots // Autumn Makes & Does

Let me explain. Like many kitchen misadventures, this started with a wayward gchat with Kelly. She and I are so excited to be podcasting again. When had to take some time off so I could get my health right, but there will be a new episode of Alphabet Soup tomorrow and we’re celebrating with girl scout cookie shots. As you do. Here’s how that happened:

17 citrus recipes that will get you through the slog to spring // Autumn Makes & Does

We have had a winter. I have done my best not to grump around on the internet about the weather, but it has been a doozy. I realized just how much the trudging and bundling was getting to me when I asked for citrus for Valentine’s Day. I’ve been self-medicating with grapefruits, meyer lemons, tangerines, and limes.

I suspect many of you can commiserate, so I wanted to share some of the citrus projects and recipes (besides Kaffir Lime Macaroons) that have gotten me through the past few months as well as some that are still on my to-make list. I hope you all find some inspiration here and please do share your own citrus accomplishments in the comments!

Kaffir Lime Macaroons

Kaffir Lime Macaroons // Autumn Makes & Does

Psst… Have you entered my giveaway for the AMAZING new gluten-free cookbook from America’s Test Kitchen? It ends soon!

My valentine got me citrus and I couldn’t have been happier. Thanks to an especially sweet friend, I had an influx of lemons, grapefruits, and tangerines come my way earlier this winter, so this time I’m working with fringe citrus: kumquats, kaffir limes, and bearss limes. Kaffir lime trees, whose leaves are widely used in Thai and other Southeast Asian cuisine, have small, bumpy, thick skinned fruits. The taste of kaffir limes is like an especially pungent, concentrated lime. They don’t have much juice, but the zest really packs a punch. I’ve been having fun playing around with them in salt, cocktails, ice cream, and some really puckery lime curd.

Light & Fluffy Gluten-free Biscuits

I’ve had to be gluten-free for almost 10 years now. That’s no time compared to some folks, but still I’ve seen some big changes in my gluten-free lifetime. When I heard that America’s Test Kitchen was coming out with a gluten-free cookbook, I knew I was seeing another huge leap. By taking on the challenge of a gluten-free cookbook, America’s Test Kitchen, which has a reputation for rigorously-tested, rock-solid recipes, really did a lot to validate gluten-free baking and cooking as something more than a trend, something worthy of the same technical consideration as anything else in the culinary world.

Strawberry Jam Fool with Coconut Whipped Cream

Strawberry Jam Fool with Coconut Whipped Cream // Autumn Makes & Does

I’ve been wanting to try making the elusive coconut whipped cream for a really long time, but am just now getting around to it. This can only mean that I’ve failed to have enough occasions lately that necessitate whipped cream. #Morepie. The reality of my life is that while I don’t typically have heavy cream on hand (I KNOW), I really almost always have a can of coconut milk squirreled away somewhere in the apartment. SO. I can see the virtue of coconut whipped cream, which uses the cream that rises to the top of a chilled can of coconut milk to make–surprise–whipped cream. Also, making whipped cream out of something that is not heavy cream feels like fun, subversive science. I’m into it. [click to continue…]

Peaches and Cream Smoothie with Maple and Ginger

Peaches & Cream Smoothie // Autumn Makes & Does

I have this favorite magnolia tree in the west village. Really, every magnolia tree is my favorite when it is full of flowers, but I’m sure this one has someone who is paid to take care if it and it truly is stunning. Last week, when I was walking past it on another 10 degree or so day, I tried hard to pretend it was full of bloom. [click to continue…]

Sorghum Salad with Harissa Roasted Carrots & Chickpeas || Autumn Makes & Does

Sometimes I joke about the fact that I wouldn’t know what to eat if it weren’t for canned chickpeas, but it’s not entirely a laughing matter. At least once a week, dinner is saved by a can of chickpeas. Admittedly it’s a bit of a rut, but one I don’t mind too much. I really love chickpeas.
